Merryville’s Verette named first team all-state

After great runs through the 2013 playoffs, the Mangham High baseball team and Catholic-Pointe Coupee softball teams claimed the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s 1A state titles. The two teams were also well represented among the 2013 Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class  1A All-State squads.

In baseball, Mangham sophomore Ridge Heisler took Outstanding Player honors after going 15-1 on the mound with a 1.97 ERA and 92 strikeouts. Heisler also batted .491 on offense with six homers and 31 RBI.

His sophomore teammate, designated hitter Dylan Ridgeway (15 HR, .375 avg.) also was selected to the team, while Mangham head coach Scott Wilcher was named the baseball Coach of the Year after leading the Dragons to their first baseball state title in school history.

Pitcher Ryann Bizette, an eighth grader (15-1, 1.02 ERA, 124 strikeouts), freshman Katelynn Bellelo (.443, 26 RBI) and her teammate Jordyn David (.383, 20 RBI, 12 2B) represent the state champions on LSWA softball team.

Archbishop Hannan senior Kimberly Nilsson (.494 avg., 38 RBI) was voted the Outstanding Player, while Westminster Christian’s Jay Artall was selected as the softball Coach of the Year.

Other pitchers on the softball squad were Cedar Creek junior Caley Pyles (132 strikeouts, 1.77 ERA), Hannan senior Maddi Shelton (21-9, 184 strikeouts) and Central Catholic sophomore Megan Landry (1.59 ERA, 191 strikeouts). Oberlin senior Haley Reeves (.539 avg., 8 home runs), freshman Laryn Graves of Montgomery (1.82 ERA, 165 strikeouts), Central Catholic junior Kimberly Russso (.444 avg., .496 on base percentage), Merryville senior Morgan Verette (.491 avg.), senior Sydney Finch of Hannan (.366 avg.), Cedar Creek senior Maggie Davidson (.461 avg.), Mangham junior Meagan Duchesne (15 HR, .516 avg.), Houma Christian senior Lindsay Crowdus (.554 avg.), Ascension Catholic senior Nancy Guillot (.602 avg.), and St. Martin’s senior Mychal Truxillo (.550 avg.) complete the softball squad.

Also on the baseball all-state team were Ouachita Christian seniors Braden Bristo (10-2, .432 avg) and Jonathan Washam (.517 avg.), Central Catholic junior Bryson Barbier (6-3 record), St. Martin’s senior Stewart Campbell (11-2 record), Central Catholic junior Barron Courtney (.426 avg.), Hannan senior Mike Hess (.489 avg.), St. John senior Trevor Curry (.489 avg.), Ouachita Christian senior Jordan Washam (.457 avg.), Country Day junior Michael Mann (.400 avg.), Central Catholic senior Josh Singleton (.438 avg.), Houma Christian sophomore Drake Battaglia (.400 avg.), Cedar Creek junior Mark Van (.404 avg.), Country Day senior Ben Harrison (8-0 record), Westminster Christian senior Jalen Williams (.390 avg.), and St. John senior Morgan Booksh (.303 avg.).
