SULPHUR – The top-ranked Florien Lady Blackcats wasted little time getting on the scoreboard and never looked back as they downed ninth-ranked Converse on Friday in the Class B state quarterfinals at Frasch Park, 13-0.

The Lady Blackcats took advantage of their District 3-B counterparts as the Lady Wildcats managed just one hit off of Florien southpaw Abbey McMillian.

Florien jumped on top in the bottom of the first inning as Caitlyn Corley drew a walk and scored on an RBI-double from McMillian to draw first blood, 1-0.

The barrage continued in the second inning when McMillian connected on a two-run double for a 3-0 lead and Whitney Byles added an RBI-single in the bottom of the third to give Florien a very comfortable advantage, 4-0.

But that wasn’t enough.

The Lady Blackcats pushed four runs across in the fourth inning off of Converse starter HarLee Possoit, building an eight-run advantage heading into the fifth inning.

After holding the Lady Wildcats scoreless again in the top half of the fifth, the Lady Blackcats went to bat looking for two runs to end it.

They quickly scored a run for a 9-0 lead and loaded the bases for power-hitting Kaitlin Davis.

Davis ended the game with one swing of the bat as she smacked a monstrous grand slam to bring the game to a close, with Florien winning, 13-0.

McMIllian fanned eight batters and gave up no runs, stretching her scoreless inning streak in the playoffs to 13. However, she did surrender her first hit of the playoffs, a single to Converse shortstop Mallory Mitchell.

McMillian went 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs, while Davis was 2-for-3 with five RBIs, four coming on the slam. Corley added a pair of hits and four runs scored for the Lady Blackcats.

Possoit suffered the loss, while Mitchell went 1-for-2 in the contest for the Lady Wildcats.
